The IHY International Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from the seven geographical regions and scientists spanning all of the subdisciplines of heliophysics. The responsibilities of the International Steering Committee include the prioritization of IHY resources and activities, providing guidance and monitoring the progress of the IHY working groups, and ensuring clear communication between the IHY teams, scientific organizations, and constituent bodies.

The International Advisory Committee counsels the IHY teams on the optimizing the relationship between the goals and efforts of IHY and other international groups, while the IHY International Steering Committee (see the IHY Organizational Structure) has the responsibility of ensuring the implementation of these recommendations and overseeing the operations within IHY.
