HELIOPHYSICS PICTURE OF THE WEEK

"Planetary Fountain"

This image is an artist's conception of the Earth's "auroral plasma fountain," which sprays atmospheric ions out into space (within the Earth's magnetosphere) at a rate that varies from 50 to 1000 tons per day, depending on how active the aurorae are in response to solar wind conditions. In the image, the aurora appears as a greenish glow encircling the pole. The fountain is excited by the aurora at all local times, though it is steadier and more prolific in the sector toward the sun.

IHY OBSERVATORY OF THE WEEK

Towers of Chankillo, Peru

The oldest solar observatory in the Americas has been discovered near the coast of Peru. This complex, established approximately 2,300 years ago, is part of a growing body of evidence indicating that our interest in the Sun began much earlier than previously thought. This discovery was made not long after the identification of a "Brazilian Stonehenge, a series of blocks arranged to mark the solstice.

IHY PERSONALITY OF THE WEEK

Dr. Jose Ishitsuka

Dr. Jose K. Ishitsuka is a researcher in radio astronomy who leads the Astronomy Area of Ancon Observatory of Geophysical Institute of Peru. He holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Tokyo University, Japan, and though his early research focused on stellar astrophysics, he also became interested is solar and geospace physics. Since 2002, he has been in charge of the project to transforming a 32 meter INTELSAT antenna into a Radio Telescope. His IHY activities include hosting two Kyushu University magnetometers, MAGDAS and CPMN, and his institute will soon be the site of a FMT telescope from Hida Observatory of Kyoto University.
