Welcome to IHY!
This week's Picture of the Week is provided courtesy of Dr. Pitan Singhasaneh of IHY-Thailand. The IHY Opening Ceremony took place during the U.N. Meeting in Vienna Austria on 19 February 2007, followed by a workshop on 20 February. All IHY regions were represented, and many new IHY programs and activities were unveiled.

The THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions During Substorms) Mission was launched February 17 to unlock the secrets of the Earth's geomagnetic storms and radiation belts - 50 years after they were first discovered during IGY!

IHY PERSONALITY OF THE WEEK


Dr. Hans J. Haubold

Dr. Hans Haubold is the originator of the United Nations "Basic Space Science" Initiative and the United Nations representative of the IHY Secretariat. Although Hans is a successful researcher in theoretical astrophysics, he has devoted the last 14 years to the Basic Space Science Initiative and the establishment and support of Space Science activities in underrepresented regions.
