* Welcome to IHY!

The International Heliophysical Year is officially upon us. The IHY Opening Ceremony was held on February 19, 2007 in conjunction with the United Nations Science and Technical Subcommittee meeting in Vienna, Austria. A special presentation on IHY plans and activities was made during the Subcommittee session, along with statements of support from participating IHY nations. Following the subcommittee meeting, U.N. delegates and IHY participants from around the world came together at the Opening Ceremony to formally announce the commencement of the International Heliophysical Year.

Statements at the Opening Ceremony were made by the following people: Dr. Madhulika Guhathakurta (NASA Headquarters), Dr. Sergio Camacho-Lara (Director, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs), Prof. Dr. Mazlan Othman (Chair of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, UN/COPUOS), Prof. Helmut O. Rucker (Austrian Academy of Sciences), and Prof. Dr. Hans J. Haubold (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs).

Dr. Guhathakurta described IHY as "a broad international effort to develop the scientific understanding necessary to effectively address all aspects of the connected Sun-Solar system... IHY through its stunning observations from space and ground, clear relevance to society and compelling science goals will provide a powerful tool for engaging the public and students in the science all over the world." Dr. Camacho-Lara praised the IHY's goal to "have all 192 Member States of the United Nations participate in the IHY 2007. It is but to be stressed that International Heliophysical Year 2007 commemorates not only 50 years since the International Geophysical Year set a milestone in the beginning of space exploration but also
marks 50 years of the interest of the United Nations in outer space."

The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Dr. Joseph M. Davila, the Executive Director of IHY. It was followed by an international planning workshop hosted by the Vienna Academy of Sciences on February 20, 2007. A special IHY exhibit was on display in the United Nations Rotunda throughout the week, featuring over 50 posters from participating IHY nations and programs around the world. As part of this exhibit, two exciting new items were premiered: the "SunWorks" collection of original Sun-themed artwork from around the world, and four special artistic posters commissioned by IHY representing the
IHY's science activities.

There are currently 75 nations with IHY Organizing Committees, and there are activities and representation in nearly all 192 United Nations Member States. IHY will run for two years, 2007-2009.

* IHY-Yemen Monthly Workshops

The National Organization Committee for IHY in Yemen, chaired by Dr. A. H. Sultan, is holding monthly National Committee Workshops throughout the International Heliophysical Year, including a workshop concurrent with the IHY Opening Ceremony in Vienna. The theme of the first workshop in January 2007 was "Celebrating IHY by fostering international scientific cooperation," and for February it was "Celebrating IHY by using the Media and Web." March's theme is "Celebrating IHY by promoting space science among the population." More information on IHY-Yemen is available at http://ihy2007.org/organization/yemen_ihy.shtml

* IHY Picture of the Week, Observatory of the Week, Personality of the Week, and Activity of the Week Premiere!
http://ihy2007.org/newsroom/weekly.shtml

Throughout IHY, we will be highlighting IHY activities through the following four features:

- The Heliophysics "Picture of the Week" can be a photo, artistic rendering, image, or scientific data. The first Heliophysics Picture of the Week shows the IHY Opening Ceremony in the United Nations rotunda, provided courtesy of Dr. Pitan Singhasaneh of IHY-Thailand.
- The IHY "Observatory" or "Instrument" of the Week highlights a scientific mission, instrument, or laboratory participating in IHY activities. The first features THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions During Substorms) Mission, which was launched February 17 to unlock the secrets of the Earth's geomagnetic storms and radiation belts - 50 years after they were first discovered during IGY!
- The IHY "Personality of the Week" is an educator, scientist, participant or student who is active in one of the many aspects of IHY. We thought that Prof. Dr. Hans Haubold, from the IHY Secretariat and the coordinator of the U.N.'s Basic Space Science Initiative, would be an outstanding example as our first personality.
- The IHY "Activity of the Week," in honor of the Opening Ceremony, is "Blast Off!" Students can build a model rocket with an empty film canister and some imagination.

We need suggestions!!! Please email recommendations for all of these categories to weekly@ihy2007.org
