IHY North American Planning Workshop held February 16-18, 2005

Workshop agenda and presentations from workshop

On Feb 16-18, 2005 the 2nd North American workshop for planning the International Heliophysical Year was held. There were over 50 registered attendees at the workshop. Several Canadian scientists attended to participate in the discussions.

Several significant issues were discussed, including:

    1. Scientifically the emphasis on Universal Processes within the solar system was continued.

    2. Changes to the science objectives were suggested to more clearly reflect the emphasis on "Universal Processes".

    3. It was suggested that the outer heliosphere become one science focus of the IHY since it is the "new frontier" of space science.

    4. Coordination with GEM, SHINE, and CEDAR - It was decided at a CEDAR and SHINE session should be planned for the summer meetings.

    5. Presentations on IPY, eGY, and CAWSES highlighted several areas of common interest. Collaborative efforts will be pursued.

    6. Presentation of the first "IGY Gold" Certificate was made. Dr. Alan Shapley, one of the principal planners of the IGY in 1957, was the recipient. The presentation was made by Dr. Joann Joselyn at the workshop banquet.

    7. It was decided that a written IHY document is needed to help communicate the program to the scientific community, funding agencies, and the public.

The IHY International Planning Workshop will be held during the IAGA Meeting 18-29 July 2005 in Toulouse, France.
