MAGDAS Now Installed in South Africa and on the Dip Equator in India
In recent weeks SERC of Kyushu University (Japan) was able to successfully install overseas two MAGDAS magnetometers (as part of Japan's numerous contributions to IHY). One was installed at Hermanus (Hermanus Magnetic Observatory), South Africa, on 14 Sept 2007
geo lat, geo long, mag lat, mag long:
-34.34 +19.24 -42.29 +82.20
The other was installed near Trivandrum (Equatorial Geophysical Research Laboratory), India, on 28 Sept 2007
geo lat, geo long, mag lat, mag long:
+8.40 +77.50 +0.20 +149.31
Data is arriving at SERC in realtime via the Internet. The data is collected in three components (X, Y, Z) and digitized for storage and immediate transmission. Once per second data and once per minute are both available from SERC (please contact the author at maeda@serc.kyushu-u.ac.jp). More MAGDAS installations are scheduled for the remainder of 2007.
The PI of the "MAGDAS Project" is Professor K. Yumoto and is also the "IHY National Organizer" for Japan. He is the current Director of SERC.

Grupo Astronomico de Zaragoza
My name is David Gonzalez, and I'm the secretary of the Grupo Astrono³mico Silos de Zaragoza (GAS), http://www.grupoastronomicosilos.org
Here at Zaragoza (Spain) we organized two events related to the IHY:
1) Last November 10th 2007, Iván Gimeno (a member of the group) gave a talk on the solar neutrino problem ("La extraña historia de los neutrinos solares desaparecidos") and David González gave a talk on the state of the art of Solar research by modern observatories and spacecrafts ("El Nuevo Sol"). Both talks took place in the frame of "Los Sábados Astronómicos", an activity along several Saturdays in October and November open for the public but mainly for teenagers which consists in multimedia talks, observations with telescopes, astronomical software demonstrations and "do it yourself" lessons on making sundials, celestial charts and other astronomical apparatus. Each Saturday session starts at 22:00h and lasts for 3 hours. These activities are included in the program of activities "12 Lunas" sponsored by the Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza.
2) Manuel Vázquez Abeledo came to our city to give a talk about the climate change: "Clima y EnergÃa: El debate del siglo XXI_ _. It took place Nov. 20, 2007 at 19:30h, and was sponsored by Ibercaja Zentrum. An interesting colloquium took place afterwards. Manuel Vázqued has been a leading solar researcher at the Instituto AstrofÃsico de Canarias, and an active divulgator. He is now also interested in the earth's climate change and astrobiology.
